Some 44 years ago, it definitely took a certain amount of courage on the part of a breed club committee to give a 24 year old German the honour of his first Bullmastiff judging debut in the UK … I am referring here to the then big names behind the Welsh & West who had invited me to judge their Club show in July 1980, held on the lawn of one of Britain’s stately homes, Clearwell Castle, Gloucestershire. Out of 53 Bullmastiffs making 152 entries (a pretty good number in that period), my BOB went to Colom Jumbo (from Limit, later winning the Group at Blackpool 1981), my BOS went to Ch Maggie May of Bunsoro. My first “British Connection” has since then been present in my heart and mind when judging this truly British breed in many parts of the world.

Coming from Mastiffs, I was actually passed for Bullmastiffs in the age of 21 in 1977, as the world’s very first specializing Championship Show breed judge for all the breeds of the Molosser family (some facts do sound pompous, I know!). The first British bred Bullmastiff I have ever put up in my home country was the fantastic export to the Netherlands, Bullstaff Pekingtown Barnacle Bill in 1978. In 1977, I also paid my first visit to Crufts, watching Ch Craigylea Sir Galahad taking the breed under Douglas B. Oliff (BOS becoming Ch Bunsoro Donna) and later winning the Group under Percy Withaker. In 2020, when I had the honour of doing the Working Group at Crufts myself, the Bullmastiff breed celebrated it‘s second Group win on that famous green carpet with BE/FR/NL/DE/PL/HU Ch Poenix Never Dies Du Monde D‘Elias taking the top honours.

Having the unique honour of doing the Club Championship Show for The Northern Bullmastiff Club in the Centenary year of the Bullmastiff breed, I do not want to bother you with too many names, countries and details of the past.

Let me just mention a few “Bullmastiff Moments” of my life which meant a lot to me: Following 1980, the WWEBC Champ Shows in 1992 and in 2016, the Club Champ Show of The League in 2002, Bucks 1983, the National Specialty of the American Bullmastiff Society in 1991 (my BOB being Ch Mr U’s Music Man, who one year later won the Working Group at Westminster), Madrid 1992 (giving the Bullmastiff breed its first Group win in Spain), Crufts in 2005 – not to mention numerous other events in more than 20 countries in the world.

Being a Member of The Kennel Club since 1992, I had the honour of “paying- back“ by holding the office of President of The German Kennel Club (VDH) and Vice-President of the FCI. Needless to say, from 1981 – 1987 I enjoyed publishing MOLOSSER MAGAZIN, the world’s first international private publication on all breeds of the Mastiff family.

Long live the Bullmastiff!
