Judging Criteria - Original Route

A1 List (Breed Specialist & Non Breed Specialist)

Persons who have previously been approved by the Kennel Club to award C.C’s and who have the support of The Northern Bullmastiff Club.

A2 List (Breed Specialist & Non Breed Specialist)

For persons who fulfil all the requirements for the A3 list and who have been assessed in accordance with Kennel Club requirements and accepted by the Kennel Club for inclusion on an A2 list.

A3 List (Breed Specialist)

Requirements for inclusion are:

  1. Minimum of 7 years judging experience in the breed and have the support of The Northern Bullmastiff Club.
  2. To have judged at one breed club show.
  3. To have judged the breed at 6 open shows or championship shows where C.C.s are not on offer where these have an adequate geographical spread.
  4. To have judged a minimum of 40 classes.
  5. To have judged a minimum of 70 dogs present.
  6. To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club accredited trainer and passed the relevant examination on Kennel Club regulations and judging procedures.
  7. To have attended a seminar by a Kennel Club accredited trainer on confirmation and movement. To have attended a Conformation & Movement "Hands-on- assessment" conducted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the assessment.
  8. To have attended at least 1 breed specific judging seminar run in accordance with the relevant Kennel Club code of best practise and passed an examination and/or assessment where applicable.
  9. To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs when they obtained their 1st entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances).
  10. To have stewarded at 12 shows.

A3 List (Non Breed Specialist)

Requirements for inclusion are:

  1. Minimum of 7 years experience in any ONE breed (to include 5 years in this breed) and have the support of Bullmastiff Club.
  2. To have judged at one club show.
  3. To have judged the breed at 6 open shows or Championship shows where C.C’s were not on offer where these have an adequate geographical spread.
  4. To have judged a minimum of 40 classes in this breed.
  5. To have judged a minimum of 70 dogs in this breed.
  6. To have awarded C.C’s in at least one other breed.
  7. To have attended at least 1 breed seminar and passed any applicable assessments.
  8. To have stewarded at 12 shows.
  9. To have bred and/or owned a minimum of 3 dogs of any breed when they obtained their 1st entry in the Kennel Club Stud Book (save in exceptional circumstances).

B List (Breed Specialist)

Requirements for inclusion are:

  1. To have 5 years experience owning and exhibiting in this breed and have the support of The Northern Bullmastiff Club.
  2. To have judged 6 classes at open show or at Championship shows where C.C’s were not on offer.
  3. To have judged 15 dogs present of this breed.
  4. To have attended 1 breed judging seminar and passed an assessment where applicable.
  5. To have attended a seminar given by a KC accredited trainer and passed the relevant examination on KC rules and regulations and judging procedures.
  6. To have attended a seminar given by a KC accredited trainer on conformation and movement.

B List (Non Breed Specialist)

Requirements for inclusion are:

  1. Minimum of 5 years judging experience in this breed and have the support of The Northern Bullmastiff Club.
  2. To have judged 3 classes of this breed at open shows or championship shows where C.C’s were not on offer.
  3. To have judged 10 dogs present in this breed.
  4. To have attended 1 breed club seminar and passed any assessment applicable.

C List

Requirement for inclusion - JEP Route Level 1 (For Breed specialist’s and Non Breed specialists)

Judging Criteria - JEP Route

JEP Route Level 1

  • Minimum of five years proven interest in pedigree dogs.
  • Attend a Conformation and Movement seminar hosted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer
  • Complete a minimum of two full-day stewarding appointments.
  • Attend a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge seminar and pass associated exam (either in person or online via Kennel Club Academy, exam effective from 1 January 2024.)
  • Pass the Points of a Dog assessment conducted by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer (effective from 1 January 2024).
Note: Judges sitting multiple-choice exams held at Breed Appreciation Days from 1st January 2024 will be required to have met the amended Level 1 criteria.

Eligibility to judge

  • Up to three classes (four if one is a puppy class) for any breed at limited or open shows.

JEP Route Level 2

Breed Specialist

  • Attend a breed appreciation day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination (MCE) for the respective breed
  • View ring stewarding seminar and take online quiz.
  • Complete critique writing seminar and take online quiz.

Non Breed Specialist

  • Attend a breed appreciation day (BAD) and pass a multiple-choice examination (MCE) for each breed.
    Note: Not mandatory for group judge for breeds in the group that they are not approved at level 4, but attendance strongly recommended.
    Note: Whilst completing the critique writing and stewarding seminars remain a JEP Level 2 requirement, the KC Board has agreed that they can be undertaken at any time, and that the judge does not need to wait until they meet the Level 1 criteria and are recommended to view prior to stewarding or judging.

Eligibility to judge

  • Unlimited number of classes for the respective breed at Limited, Open or Championship shows (no CCs).
  • Any variety classes, groups and best in show at limited shows.

JEP Route Level 3

  • Undergo minimum of three mentoring sessions with a minimum of 12 months between first and third session
  • Be observed judging a breed club show, breed supported entry show or championship show without CCs once mentoring sessions have been undertaken
  • Complete remaining 10 full-day stewarding appointments (onetime qualification)
  • Have owned/bred a minimum of three dogs when they obtained their first entry in The Kennel Club Stud Book – save for exceptional circumstances (one-time qualification for first breed in which a judge awards CCs)
  • Have achieved the relevant hands-on experience in line with the stated requirements for the relevant breed:

  • Tier 3 Bullmastiff: Original Route: 70 Dogs, JEP Route: 35 Dogs

Eligibility to judge

  • Unlimited number of classes for the respective breed at Limited, Open or Championship shows (no CCs)

JEP Route Level 4 CC Judge

  • Attend and passed a breed-specific assessment for the specific breed run by The Kennel Club.

Eligibility to judge

  • Award Challenge Certificates in the respective breed.
  • Any variety classes, groups and best in show at limited shows.
